Nobody decided to leave

Customers rarely fire you. They move, or they get busy, or the reminder went to an email address they stopped checking in 2021. The relationship didn’t end, it just stopped being scheduled.

That list is sitting in your system right now: the quotes that went quiet, the annual service nobody rebooked, the client from eighteen months ago who was delighted at the time.

Why finding new ones gets all the attention

Because it is visible. Ad spend has a dashboard. Following up has nothing, no campaign, no cost per lead, no report that shows you what you didn’t do. So it loses every internal argument by default, despite being the cheaper of the two by a wide margin.

The cheapest job you will ever book is with somebody who has already paid you once.

What a follow-up message should actually say

It should be timed to something real and it should be short. Not a newsletter. Not a blast. A reminder that they’re due, the reason it matters, and the single easiest way to book.

  • Anchor it to a real event, a service due, a quote that went quiet, a plan that ran out
  • Send it by text; email from a small business goes unread and you know it does
  • Make the reply a single word or a single tap
  • Send it in the morning, not the evening

The line you have to be careful about

A reminder and a promotion are not the same thing, and not just editorially. Under TCPA, a reminder tied to something the customer already bought sits in different territory from an offer. Twenty percent off this month is marketing and needs prior express written consent on file.

Build them as separate flows with separate consent, and honor STOP instantly on both. Most businesses have never made that distinction, and most intake forms do not collect what would be needed for the second one. That is worth fixing before you send anything.

Start with ninety days

Do not run the whole list at once. Take everybody who went quiet in the last ninety days, send one well-timed message, and see what comes back. It is the smallest possible version of this and it will tell you what the rest of the list is worth. If you would rather not run it by hand, that is exactly what our follow up and recall service does.
